Digipak Research #1
Front Cover
A digipak I chose to study was that of Rihanna's album "Loud". This example of a digipak carries an obvious theme of red and roses which is portrayed through the pictures used for this piece. Rihanna has used herself as her brand due to the whole of her digipak containing images of her, this in itself will draw attention to the digipak because of her bold image and colour of her hair which in turn matches the vibrant red theme she has used throughout.
The title of the album is "Loud"; this title is placed and the bottom of the digipak and evenly spread out to fill that area. Its also in capital letters which makes it more powerful and eye catching therefore more likely to attract consumers. Due to her being so well known and her picture used on the front cover shows who she is and is such a bold image she has moved her name into the spine so the everything else can take centre stage. The mass use of red used in this digipak could represent anger or love, this would be the immediate thought of a customer. She therefore could be expressing both of these emotions in her songs that make up this album.
This is the back of the digipak, this is a simple design with the list of her songs on the right hand side and the mention of the producers and other information below that. The main image on the back is of Rihanna again with the main attention being on her. Her hair due to the colour of it stand out most where the titles of her songs are a diluted colour red. She has left it simple but yet makes herself stand out due to promoting herself as an artist.
The image used here is similar to the one on the front cover, due to the key themes being red and roses here is a good example of it with there being a rose in Rihanna's hand. The rose is meant to symbolize love, beaut and dominance which links in with all the songs that are on this album.
This image is a personal image which could in turn mean that this album is one that is personal to her. The rose has made another appearance here which shows that the rose is a symbol of Rhianna, its something that we associate with her and something that represents her due to it showing up many times throughout her digipak.
Digipak Research
Here is Katy Perry's digipak for "Teenage Dream". Straight away you can see the style of the artist and her music is hugely shown through the colours used throughout this design. The colours give a feel on enjoyment and brightness, so this could reflect in her music. The two CD's within this pack have been made to look like two sweets making the idea of this digipak fun and interesting; also due to this it could appeal to Katy Perry's younger audience.

The Leaflet inside the digipak has a repetitive theme of candyfloss throughout the whole of it. This makes the leaflet have an overall obvious theme rather than having loads of them and confusing the audience of the genre. It makes the leaflet fun and bright for the audience. The colours and use of sweets could be seen as enforcing the vibrant pop feel of her genre of music. The font within the leaflet is printed in "candy red and white" which again could be related to her young feeling and her younger target audience for this album. The font is spiraling which influences the funess of this digipak due to it all being related to sweets, it could be a guilty pleasure album and she has tried to show this through sweets. The pictures used on this leaflet show her with cakes which could imply that she is a sweet natured person and this could be the reasoning for the sweet theme.
The image inside of the digipak shows Katy Perry dressed up like a prom queen. She wears a crown like she has won a title. I believe the reason for her using the prom queen them is to create imagery and to link it with the title of her album "Teenage Dreams". Every girl wants to become prom queen which makes this relateable to her audience. Because of this it adds a narrative feel and it could show what her songs are going to be about.

The song for my music video
https://soundcloud.com/kingsleykinglin/safari
This is the song I am using for my music video, this song is called "Safari" and its genre is alternative pop; it is written by Kingsley Phillips and sung by him and his sister. I chose this song because it involves both genders which could in turn make it easier when thinking about recording for the actually video. I chose to use this song due to the beat and lyrics being so catchy, the lyrics are also clear and give a good to what I should base my video on and an indication to what way I should go with recording things to take place in my video. I also believe that this song is very relateable which is what most artists aim to do for their audiences.
These are the lyrics for the song;

These are the lyrics for the song;
And we go, and we go so far back
And I know, me and you would make a perfect pack
And we'll show, there's a bond that will never crack
And we'll glow, why aren't we already on these tracks
Tonight!!
Maybe a few beers will sort us out,
Dying for dutch courage to let it out
Say the things we want to say that we won’t shout
I need to let you know what I’m all about
Come on girl let’s get talking
It's a bright day let’s get walking
The start of something that I don’t want ever to end
But for now whilst I’m alone I’ll have to pretend
We'll sail the sea, we'll walk the shore
We'll fly the skies, forever I'm yours
You take my hand, I'll hold yours tight
Together we'll stand one by one tonight (x2)
Don't let go, this time
And don't let go, this time
And don't let go, let go, this time
We haven't got far and far to climb
And we go, and we go so far back
And I know, me and you would make a perfect pack
And we'll show, there's a bond that will never crack
And we'll glow, why aren't we already on these tracks
Tonight!!
You can stop texting that other bloke
We don't need a barrier we need to provoke and ignite
These sticks already laid out,
He was destine to take another route
But I’d always choose you, and I hope you'd choose me
Unlike his, my love will always come free
And to my pending locked heart that still awaits
I'd hand you the key
We'll sail the sea, we'll walk the shore
We'll fly the skies, forever I'm yours
You take my hand, I'll hold yours tight
Together we'll stand one by one tonight (x2)
Don't let go, this time

ABC task
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pxOq3gQKi5k&feature=youtu.be
Before I could create my own music video we had to work in small groups to film and edit a video to a song that was given to us by our media teacher. We had to film rushes which were relevant to the words in the song. We then had to edit it so the image of the letter would be at the same time of when the artist said the letter in the song.

Music Video Analysis
Rhianna - Disturbia
The title to this song links extremely well with the visuals within this video, its a disturbing video but done in a subtle way. The video at the start is set in a surrealistic torture chamber where we see Rhianna smoking beside a piano. We then go on to see Rhianna in a cage where she is wearing lenses that are covering her eyes which gives them a all white look like she has rolled her eyes to the back of head. Almost zombie like. This immediately gives her power as she has a strong look and is portrayed as scary and spooky. At the Bridge of her song Rhianna includes a thriller style dance routine. The bit i like most of the video is the fact that they overlay Rhianna's face with the dance routine, this to be bring true emotion to the video and because there is a lot going on the viewer will become engrossed in this video which is what any artist wants.
Through this video Rhianna is in control, she is the dominate one among the other dancers. Throughout this video also the main focus is Rhianna as most of the camera shots are of her, the close ups also show Rhianna which is another indication that she is the dominant one and the power is with her. The close ups of her are also to show emotion, facial expressions and her movement. This video contains a lot of jolt movements which are done sharply, e.g. when the spider crawls onto her shoulder, the jolts are also done to the beat which shows musicality. The video is dark throughout most of it apart from a few odd bits of light, this light is shown when it hits Rhianna's face in close up also only a minority of the video actually represents the lyrics.
There is a part in the song that talks about struggle and the video goes with the lyrics but for great deal of this video the back ground dancers and their movements speak for themselves. Rhianna is seen in the video with objects such as stuffed wolves and mannequins, they are seen as part of the world that is being portrayed in the video. In my opinion she feels comfortable with things like this around her whereas some people wouldn't find this normal especially when shes all over a male mannequin instead of a real man. When we see Rhianna chained to the floor trying to set herself free, there are many shots used throughout this scene and they all go in time with the beat. Although the stuffed animals and mannequins are weird Rhianna is also surrounded by strange looking men and transvestites. She looks as if she comfortable with all these things being around her like its the only life style she has.
An effect that i love within this video is when Rhianna shakes her head etc and its been edited to give it a dizzy effect because it looks like the whole image is shaking.
This video is a subtle disturbing video and i think that's what Rhianna has tried to give off here. It shows a way of life and what is within it, its also a video that explains fully the title of this song "Disturbia"
Music Video Analysis
Ed Sheeran - A Team
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UAWcs5H-qgQ
This video by Ed Sheeran tells a story and that's why i have chosen this video. The video is in black and white which makes it simple, it doesn't take the attention away from the lyrics and the music in the video. The story throughout this video is about a homeless girl on drugs and selling herself to get her fix. Its an inspiring video because its something that happens ever day around the world and can happen to anyone. Its a video that people can relate to whether they are going through it or whether they know someone who is going through it.
At the start of the video it shows an image of a young lady looking over the body of another girl. The girls who's body that is in the close up shot then wakes up on a bench as if it were all a dream and that dying might be the outcome to her life style. I like the close up at the beginning of the video and how it blurs out and goes into a long shot of the same girl. I also love that the video isn't structured, it shows a girls life and how she gets through it day by day and what she has to go through. Its scrappy and isn't a music video with lights and props and different things other music artists use for their videos such as Lady Gaga.
In the video the feeling of it is isolation for the homeless girl, it makes you think about your own life. The lyrics get inside your head which is really effective and you are in the video with the girl as you listen to Ed Sheeran sing. The girl in the video just needs a chance which is what she gets when someone buys her big issue from her in the video and they don't judge and sit and talk with her. It gives you an insight on the type of person you are and makes you question whether you could be that person to give them a chance and not to judge.
There is a lot of establishing shots in this video which i like because it gives you an insight to what she is looking at and how she sees things from her point of view. Also the establishing shots are effective due to them showing her surroundings and what type of place she is living in. The shot where everything in the background gets faster but the young lady stand still and her actions are normal is effective because it contrasts with the young girls body at the start of the video and her being dead. Its like her life is flashing before her eyes. It could also be that she sees her life in fast motion everyday.

Jonas Akerlund - Music Video Director
Jonas Akerlund - Music Video Director
Jonas Akerlund is a Swedish international director, his work consists of music videos, commercials, documentaries and short films. He is most known for his recent work, directing Lady Gaga's infamous video "Telephone" that featured Beyonce. He is also known for Madonna's video for "Ray of Light" which won Jonas a Grammy for Best Music Video, a record seven awards at the 1998 MTV Video Music Awards including Video Of The Year.
Jonas Akerlund has worked with many different artists on their Music Videos some of which include;
Britney Spears - "Hold It Against Me",
Pink - "Sober"
David Guetta ft. Rhianna - "Who's that chick?" (Day & Night version)
The Rolling Stones - "Rain Fall Down"
Scissors Sisters - "Tits On The Radio"
Maroon 5 ft. Christina Aguilera - "Moves Like Jagger"
Before Jonas became a Music Video Director he was a member of the Swedish metal band "Bathory". He was a member from 1983 through to 1984; the first piece of directing he did was for the Swedish pop band "Roxette".
Akerlund forte is stylish music videos, he is well known for creating music videos that mock forms of film trailers and short films. Jonas doesn't focus on a particular genre of artist or band for his videos as some directors may do. He makes every video he does fit the style, personality and attitude of the artist he is working with. He has worked with such a wide range of different genres which shows how versatile he is and makes his music video portfolio enhanced and shows his abilities in working with different genres and personalities. Even though Jonas was in mental band he doesn't sway more to what he likes when directing other artists music videos.
Akerlund produces mainly mainstream work but also produces some underground work for less heard of bands. Each of his videos is different, from live performance music videos such as Hollywood Undead to narrative videos such as Lady Gaga ft. Beyonce. He also has been known to include some controversial topics within his videos which can be seen as dark an opinions or views that the majority of people wouldn't agree with. This is shown in Christina Aguilera's video "Beautiful" where the use of anorexia, homosexuals and transvestites are used throughout to portray that everyone is beautiful no matter what others say. A video that has been criticized is Prodigy- "Smack My Bitch Up". This video was banned from television because of people feeling that the message encourages violence towards women. Accusations like this got it banned from television due to views not feeling comfortable or seeing a different side to the song.
Jonas Akerlund is big on editing in his videos, his use of editing enhances the video. The editing in Lady Gaga's video- "Paparazzi" makes it easier for the viewer to follow the narrative more with the items used such as; newspapers flashing up to show snippets of story that go with the video.
Theres a point in the video where Lady Gaga is falling and a black and white swirling spiral shows up behind her. This is effective because its almost like shes going to fall into the spiral.
Lady Gaga's ft Beyonce video "Telephone" gives the impression of what Jonas is known for. Its a very unusual video more like a short film. The video leaves many question unanswered to the viewers such as; Why Gaga and Beyonce poison the cafe visitors? What will happen to the visitors? Will Lady Gaga and Beyonce get caught?. The video also ends with "To be Continued" which is how films end sometimes so it defiantly has the characteristics of a short film. The video also has a slight resemblance to the film "Kill Bill" because of the car used in it. The yellow truck used in this video was learnt to Lady Gaga and Jonas Akerlund for the video by Quentin Tarantino as it was the exact same truck used in the film "Kill Bill". With the use of the truck in the video it gave it a more Hollywood style and effect.
Lady Gaga's video "Paparazzi" was also directed by Jonas Akerlund and follows a narrative storyline. This is shown where Lady Gaga's boyfriend attempts to murder her but before he does this she gets her revenge and poisons him. The video focuses on the artist Lady Gaga a lot and is very stylized. One thing i like about this video is the use of narrative throughout, Jonas has great ideas for storylines which has worked so well in this video with the artist and the song. Due to Jonas focusing on the artist a lot he shows this by using close ups of her throughout the video. Also the use of pre production editing that's shown with the black and white spiral and the newspapers in the video. The costumes used in the video goes with the personality of the artist. It shows that the artist had a lot of input into the costumes as well.
The reasons why i chose to study Jonas Akerlund is due to his use of storyline throughout the videos for Lady Gaga- "Telephone" and "Paparazzi". I love how he uses a storyline to draw the audience in and it gives them something to follow. Throughout the artists he has used he is so versatile and doesn't just stick to one style or what he knows. He is capable of producing a wide range of different videos, styles for different artists.

Transistion music video
http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=g-upl&hl=en&v=xIoiWvPEa4s&gl=US
The above link is my induction project - creating a music video. We were given a piece of music and had to produce a music video with the music we were given. Throughout the project i learnt the different software and tools we would be using to create our music video in A2 media. During the making of the music video we added a numerous post- production effects, the main ones being the saturation and hue of the single clips we recorded. We changed these particular ones to make the images and clips more brighter and to have an over all better look than the original so it catches the viewers eye more.
Whilst we were making the video i think it made me reevaluate how what A2 is going to consist of and whether i can do it or not. I believe that its going to be challenging but hopefully the outcome at the end would have been worth it.
